Covireivac: Mobilizing a nation for science

Summer 2020. The pandemic strikes, and the world holds its breath. Professor Odile Launay, member of the COVID-19 Vaccine Scientific Committee and coordinator of COVIREIVAC*, has a mission of national importance: to recruit 25,000 French volunteers to test COVID-19 vaccines.  Inserm, via its F-CRIN platform, entrusted us with this historic responsibility. How could we convince thousands of citizens to participate in clinical trials in the midst of a health crisis? This crucial question prompted us to completely rethink the codes of scientific communication. COVIREIVAC had to become more than a clinical trial platform: it had to become a citizen movement for science.

*COVIREIVAC, a COVID-19 vaccine clinical research consortium led by I reivac and INSERM, in conjunction with the ANRS Emerging Infectious Diseases Agency (ANRS/MIE).

Our vision of progress

Since COVIREIVAC's ambition is to transform every citizen into a player in medical research, the platform must embody scientific transparency and collective commitment in the face of the pandemic.

We proposed an inclusive and educational communication strategy to speak directly to the core and reason of the French people. The goal: to overcome legitimate fears about vaccination and create a wave of national solidarity.

Our human and transparent approach positions COVIREIVAC as a bridge between cutting-edge research and the general public. Science becomes accessible, citizen participation becomes heroic. This authenticity transforms apprehension into commitment, allowing the platform to mobilize far beyond its initial objectives.

Our actions

Advancing public trust

A visual identity that speaks everyone's language, embodied through a web platform, created and maintained from A to Z. Our creative concept is based on a simple principle: in a health crisis, clarity saves lives. Covireivac.fr becomes the beacon in the Covid-19 information storm.

We created a comprehensive digital ecosystem that guides, informs, and reassures: simplified registration, educational content, clear infographics. This platform says what the French people need to hear: your participation matters, your safety is our priority.

  • 40,000 volunteers registered (initial target: 25,000)

  • 10 days to reach the target of 25,000 registrations

  • Exceptional engagement rate on monthly newsletters

Advancing scientific communication 

We orchestrated a media symphony to spread the call for volunteers. From virtual press conferences to filming in university hospitals, each communication action was carefully planned to maximize impact while respecting the sensitive health context.

The organization of the shoot for TF1's 8 p.m. news program illustrates our approach: coordination between Inserm, university hospitals, volunteers, doctors, and journalists. A complex ballet masterfully orchestrated to ensure accurate and reassuring information for the general public.

Advancing citizen engagement

We maintained vital links with volunteers to transform their registration into active participation. Monthly newsletters, news flashes, personalized tutorials: each volunteer became an ambassador for French research.

This ongoing communication created a community that was engaged, informed, and proud to contribute to the collective effort against the pandemic.

The results 

Transforming participation in clinical trials into an act of national solidarity.

Exceeding all objectives: 

  • 40,000 volunteers registered (160% of the target)

  • 25,000 registrants reached in just 10 days

  • More than 400 media reports generated

  • 100 interview requests processed

Major media impact:

  • National coverage, including TF1's evening journal (the major TV journal in France)

  • Continuous media presence throughout the project

  • Positioning of Covireivac as a benchmark for French vaccine research

Innovation in crisis communication:

  • First clinical trial platform with a 360° strategy

  • Accessible and transparent scientific communication model

  • Creation of a new standard for citizen engagement in public health

Communication didn't just help achieve the objectives: it transformed a health challenge into a national mobilization, proving that when science speaks the language of the heart, citizens respond.
